Two years ago, a fire broke out in a high-rise building in Jixiangyuan community, Ürümqi, a city in Eastern Turkistan that had been colonized and oppressed by China for 75 years. Videos revealed that pandemic control fences blocked fire trucks from entering, and locked fire exits trapped residents inside. Strict lockdown policies from the Chinese government led to the deaths of at least ten people, all of them Uyghurs. In the days following the fire, protests broke out in Ürümqi, as people came together to demand justice for the victims and an end to the Covid lockdown policies. Along with Peng Lifa's one-person protest on Sitong Bridge in Beijing one month prior, the fire ignited indignation and demonstrations across China. People mourned on the streets with flowers, candles, and blank sheets of paper, calling for freedom and justice. Thousands in cities around the world stood out in solidarity, forming the White Paper Movement, the first major protest since 1989.
