I mostly think of the 90s as a time characterized by a mixture of boredom and dread.

My family’s economic status started its long slide, as my dad slowly lost his career because the motion picture film post-processing industry ceased to exist. College was already insanely exciting expensive and everyone took loans. It was no panacea.

To expand on that: the first election I was eligible to vote in was 2000. Watching the results of that be twisted by corruption and power was proof that the era of the America I grew up being told existed was at an end.
