I worked at Valve for quite a while and made games like HL2 and Portal 2. Was @weier_josh on "that which must not be renamed".

Though Gabe did indeed say this line, the team worked over weeks to slowly build up two parallel versions of the game to test with people within the company to demonstrate to them and the team itself that we should move directions.
