Opinion | Democrats shouldn’t bail out Trump as the shutdown drags on The best time for the opposition to take a stand, rather than settle for untrustworthy promises, is right now.

The real choice, no matter how much Senators wish it weren't:

"Unfortunately, making things better for the American people coming out of this shutdown is probably not an option. Either Trump makes things worse with Democratic affirmation, or Trump makes things worse despite Democratic opposition."

Somebody explain how this isn’t state-run media: the sitting VP of the United States sliding into the host chair of the Charlie Kirk show. When the government hands itself the mic, what do you call it?

Republicans complain loudly and incessantly about the national debt as long as a Democrat is president, then go quiet and pass legislation to explode the debt whenever they have power. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Good morning! 🌞

The Trump administration threatened to shut down Social Security yesterday because it was mad at a judge.

Really!

For years the right dismissed the claim that Trump does Putin’s bidding as conspiratorial derangement.

Zelensky didn’t disrespect the U.S. He didn’t disrespect Trump. He’s losing his aid for disrespecting Putin, the man slaughtering his people, which Trump and Vance took as a personal affront.

Struggling With Errors, DOGE Deletes Billions More From List of Savings For the second time in a week, Elon Musk’s government overhaul effort updated its β€œwall of receipts” to remove mistakes that inflated its success.

We should start with the presumption that DOGE is lying to us all the time about everything

When Arielle Kane last year joined a team working on an innovative federal program to make childbirth safer in the U.S., the mission spoke to her.

She could save lives.

America has the worst mortality rate among high-income countries for pregnant and postpartum women, and those in underserved communities face some of the highest risks. Their babies also are in danger if their moms can’t access prenatal care or be seen quickly for complications because they live in so-called β€œmaternal deserts” where obstetric care isn’t available or is limited.

Arielle Kane was hired to work on a program at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid that was trying to reduce maternal deaths.

Last weekend, she was let go.

CDC 'disease detectors' among hundreds fired as Trump administration ramps up agency cuts Administration officials last week informed CDC leaders of plans to cut up to 10% of its workforce as it targeted federal probationary employees.

New: Last night, hundreds of CDC post-doc fellows were fired, including all in the group who call themselves the "disease detectors," and are the future of public health lab leaders. One senior official told me, "It is going to cripple public health for decades."

Wildfire climate connection Climate change, including increased heat, extended drought, and a thirsty atmosphere, has been a key driver in increasing the risk and extent of wildfires in the western United States during the last ...

ABC, NBC & CBS dedicated about 16 minutes of airtime last night to the California wildfires without once mentioning climate change.

Since the news failed do it's job, here's a short summary of the role of climate change and wildfire risk:

Fascism is, in essence, the belief that the β€œnation” only refers to a certain group of people and they are justified in overriding legal, democratic, and ethical norms to attain the power they deserve. Christian nationalism, white nationalism etc are just different shades of fascism.

Political violence always benefits authoritarians because liberals will always condemn it and authoritarians, regardless of whether they are perpetrators or victims, will always use it to claim more power.

I keep remembering that the official Republican solution to gun violence is just... more gun violence. "The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun" means the plan -- the only plan -- is that AFTER the shooting starts, there's more shooting. Prevention isn't even considered.
