I don’t think anything good will come of me telling this person not to be defensive. It’s not “caregivers are bad” day, it’s grief for those we have lost to ableism.

Yep, caregiving is hard. That is never, EVER a reason to kill a vulnerable person in your charge, and no amount of respite care changes the fact that our society thinks it’s reasonable to.

Caregivers: Disability Day of Mourning is not about you.

It’s not the biggest thing, but it is pretty indicative of how disabled people are assumed completely incapable—and why people who can might choose not to divulge, even if it hurts on some level.

This is the sort of alienating behavior that nondisabled management think is perfectly reasonable. Well, if there’s an emergency, you need someone!

Okay, but don’t come with me to the bathroom, to get a snack. I am not a child. Don’t demand details of my medical condition that have no bearing.

An unknown number of my colleagues are also disabled. In the event of a fire or some such, they could need help. But because I use a mobility aid, I am expected to divulge details of my disability and have someone follow me around the whole time.

No, it’s not a historic building.

They wanted to know “the nature of my impairment” (in British parlance impairment is a more widely expected term, but I don’t love it). If I needed help evacuating, their policy is to assign someone to stay with me at all times.

I didn’t want to cause problems, so I coughed it up. But.

Something has been sitting strangely on my mind this week. I am about to go with my colleagues to the a significant archive, and my professor had to email back and forth with a representative about my evacuation needs “before they can support my visit”.

I think it’s not scientifically sound or consistent with my lifelong experience. Cats are social creatures and engage in reciprocal behavior.

“I hate cats. They don’t constantly want me.”

“I hate cats. They don’t let me do whatever I want to them.”

“I hate cats. One was pushed back at me once and now I will act out against all of them.”

People who vocally hate cats are a warning flare.

I don’t mean “have a preference”. That’s fine.

The people who want you to know they disdain cats are actively trying to tell you what kind of person they are: someone who needs to be the center of the world and will do insensitive things to be it.

I promise, as brutal and lethal and demoralizing as ableism can be: there are a lot of prejudices about these days.

It’s never a good look to say you belong to a group against whom society bears “the last acceptable prejudice”, because a lot of groups have experienced prejudice in the last 24 hours. You just weren’t concerned.
