It's really weird to hear folks talking about the Syria example, as though that regime hadn't been worn down by a 13-year civil war and massive refugee crisis BEFORE it fell.

Good stuff! I do wish they mentioned how universal single-stair is in the rest of the world. It's not just Seattle!

Seattle’s climate and housing efforts collide against an unexpected bottleneck State and city lawmakers have mandated denser housing and the electrification of new homes. A weak link has emerged.

"... the process to get four homes hooked up to the city’s power utility lasted more than two years, longer than building the homes themselves, and cost the company more than $270,000."

It would be interesting to run a little regression of which WBC team rosters are the most disapora-based. I'd guess Italy is #1.

There’s a lot wrong with this report: their methods of analyzing safety are poor: they don’t attempt to quantify the safety benefits of dual-stair reqs. But the most galling? A 7-12.5% cost savings is cited as meager.

10% decrease in hard costs would build A LOT of of housing in this state!

Land outside of town is cheaper per acre than land in town. A square has the most floor space relative to wall length of any rectangle, so cheaper to build, heat, and maintain. I'm no expert in business but it just seems like cheap low-density volume is the name of the suburban sprawl game.

Well, I'm skeptical. Not about your hometown specifically, but that big box would have higher sales than small per sf in general.
It seems like the business model of big box is based around cheap space, combining part of the function of a warehouse with retail.

I think this is right. It's good to get the "steelman" on the record. Need pieces in opposition too, naturally. You don't get that from algorithmic media.

well, and retail sf is different from lineal frontage! Which is different from number of unique retail establishments.
We have dumb big box stores, is what I'm saying.

It appears that a Polymarket account called "Magamyman" made $515,000 in a single day betting on last night's U.S. strike on Iran, with the first trade placed 71 minutes before the news broke publicly.

Is there any other analog in international relations to the situation where Iran and Pakistan buddy up and Afghanistan and India buddy up because everyone hates their next-door neighbor? And did Iraq ever get in on that (by buddying up to Afghanistan)?

To be clear I'm thinking of Iran and Venezuela as free riders in the rule-based post WWII international order. The order protected their ability to oppose the most powerful international actors from a position of relative weakness. There's always free riding oppos in any given structure.
