Black-and-white image of the University of Edinburgh’s Old College courtyard, with a domed tower rising above stone buildings. The Ferret logo sits in the top left and a red label reads “REVEALED”. Large white text over the lower half says: “Edinburgh Uni staff are losing their jobs. Their boss has two”. Smaller text underneath adds that Sir Peter Mathieson has confirmed he is being paid for a board role at a university spin-off despite the university’s apparent financial crisis.

🔴NEW: The principal of the University of Edinburgh has confirmed he is working a paid second job while overseeing cuts that have seen hundreds of staff leave the institution.

X: Why are so many organisations leaving? Many organisation have recently announced that they will no longer be posting on their X accounts.

Brilliant to see so many leading organisations in Northern Ireland - like Queens University and Belfast City Council - quitting Twitter as it’s incompatible with their values.

Maybe Scotland could learn a lesson here and do the decent thing too…?

Palestine Action have WON their judicial review in the High Court!
A massive victory for free speech, freedom of association and the right to protest.
A massive defeat for the draconian attempts by Keir Starmer's government to curtail our fundamental rights.

Doubtful - the same survey also seems to have asked about very different matters, eg whether Keir Starmer should step down or facial recognition technology should be used more

True certainly but the overwhelming majority of people will not have come close to that level of engagement with the issue. It's actually surprising that that the proportion of "don't knows" in the poll isn't higher

But sample sizes for Scotland and Wales small - 6741 adults in GB suggests around 566 in Scotland (8.4% of population) and 324 in Wales (4.8%)

Interesting YouGov poll of adults in England, Scotland and Wales shows surprisingly strong support for preserving regional minority languages in the UK, eg Gaelic, Cornish etc. Strongest in Wales and weakest in Scotland (connected to polarisation over independence?)

In the UK academic recession, you will be at one of these stages since many unis buy the same cuts model from the same consultancies. It is always the same process:
*Talk of belt-tightening
*Incidental savings (e.g. printing, refreshments)
*Travel budgets cut
*Promotion freeze (1/4)
