For a while I had a personal scale actually on my LB page. It was like this at the time:
1: one of the worst movies I’ve seen
2: bad
2.5: average
3: good
4: amazing
5: one of the best movies I’ve seen

I have a shared movie spreadsheet with friends where I still rate things mostly like that

Because LB had become such a popular site, I can’t reliably expect people to come to my ratings on their on their own self-contained terms. I could no longer handle the idea of people thinking I didn’t like a movie I gave a 3 or 3.5!

Similarly I see 2.5 as “average”

This is partly because there is a strange meta-language to the specific stars on Letterboxd. If I give something a 3.5 I consider that a very high rating, but in the context of that site it plays pretty negative somehow?

I recently went through my Letterboxd and removed most of my star ratings because I found them completely baffling and bizarre in retrospect.
