13. The first 15-30 seconds of your video is crucial. You’ve gotta hook someone who took the risk to click on your video. Don’t waste time. Get right to why the video is going to meet their need.

That first impression is everything.

12. YouTube analytics should be used to hone and refine what you’re making to make it better, not to evaluate your worth.

Numbers fluctuate. It’s up to you to use them in a productive way. Otherwise you’ll rise and fall hourly with how well or poorly a particular video is doing

11. Make sure, if you are on camera, that you are well lit. Such a basic thing, but vitally important. You will increase your engagement metrics when you can be seen clearly.

Remove the barriers for your audience.

10. Comments aren’t personal. You have to learn to handle negative comments if you want to succeed.

Your replies should be more about modeling the behavior that you’d want to see than appealing to your baser instincts.

Also, become comfortable incorporating words in your thumbnail. Play with fonts, sizes, and colors to get the best pop you can.

8. The first videos you post are probably going to suck. Go in with that expectation. However, it will give you some data to start to analyze, and this is where you can really make strides if you interpret your data properly.

That data should inform your decisions for future vids.

7. Youtube REWARDS consistency. It’s better to reliably post one video per month than to post a bunch one month and go silent the next. This helps YT find your audience faster and that audience will appreciate content that’s reliable.

Focus on repeatable, sustainable, and reliable.

6. Use specific keywords in your video title and description that help YouTube understand what the video is about. That’s the best way to unlock the power of the algorithm to find the best audience for your content. It’s one of the smartest returns on investment of your time as a smaller channel.

5. Stop networking. Entirely. That’s not how you grow a YouTube channel. It’s grown by making content, posting it, and letting the algorithm find your audience for you.

Again, everything you spend time and money on should be in service of the vision of the channel. Be disciplined in that.

4. Be cheap. If you’re starting out, you’re just trying to prove the concept of your channel. Don’t make a huge investment in equipment, just what is needed to deliver your content. All the bells and whistles can wait.

Take Lone Starr’s advice from Spaceballs: “Bring only what you need to survive!”

3. Going viral isn’t the goal. That’s a byproduct of putting out content, reviewing it, refining it, and repeating it.

Focus your efforts on producing something of quality that is sustainable, not trying to catch the algorithm just right.

Consistency in your content is what produces growth.

2. You must prioritize properly to grow a channel. A livestream subscriber alert doesn’t matter all that much compared to making the audio in your video well balanced.

Spend your time on the important, not so flashy things that will set you up for long term success.

1. Start with a vision. You must have a vision of what you want your YouTube channel to be. If it is aimless, it won’t grow sustainably

Then ask yourself “What is the appeal of this vision to a new viewer?”

Answer that question and write it down. Content you make should aim to fulfill that answer
