The GRFP is one of the only safety nets STEM PhD students have for doing independent research and having guaranteed funding. It is so upsetting to see some of the best and brightest among us not know if they're getting their next paycheck.

What the NSF is doing this week is damaging *generations* of scientific researchers and American investments in science. Billions of US tax payer dollars in investment, being thrown away, because of a fucking fishing expedition that is intended to terrorize and set the stage for a real witch hunt.

it's hard to know what to do with the dei efforts part of it. a lot of people acknowledged that it's corporate virtue signaling or placating, and I'm only imagining how much good work is being undone. it makes these papers feel immediately necessary and unwritable due to being rendered obsplete.

I am in the paper writing phase for a grant where we interviewed a hundred women and LGBT PhD physicists about their career paths and how they feel about DEI efforts in private, govt, and academic settings.

STEM majors need DEI maybe more than anyone else. When we ignore it, people die. From racially biased algorithms, from medicine that isn't tested on women, from the belief that eugenics works, from missiles that we don't take responsibility for building, from the energy use of AI killing the earth.

The technical/social binary is so well enforced that many scientists believe that just because something produces numbers, it must be completely infallible, and anyone who says anything else is a sissy who is trying to ruin the scientific purity of their math/code.

I'm terrified about removing DEI initiatives from STEM programs, especially eng and comp sci. The experiences that stuck with me the most from undergrad are the ASTONISHING statements I have heard from STEM majors who think everyone else is so stupid as to be considered literally subhuman.
