If I can ever find a way to rejoin FB and other spaces without being a professional social media user instead of a writer, I will do it. But for now, you can find me updating quietly from this little corner of the online universe. You're all loved, and I miss you. <3

I know I've missed trends and easy solutions to problems I might have in publishing, but I had to weigh all of those things against my health and well-being. And I am simply better off. I wish it were different, but it isn't.

I will say I miss certain aspects of my online community. I was in several tight knit author groups and editor groups. I miss those people. I miss knowing about their lives and their triumphs and woes. I miss helping where I could. And I am out of the loop on certain things.

Body, mind, spirit, family wise, work wise, community wise, I am healthier for having more or less given up social media. I did keep this account because I never got into the habit of scrolling here. I even put together that pesky extra bookshelf that had been sitting around for months.

I have a friend who calls it "the sit pit" when she is stuck scrolling and scrolling and scrolling. She also has ADHD. I've decided that social media can be especially terrible for people like me because we go for that cheap dopamine reward and just scroll our life away.

This isn't to say that social media doesn't have its good points. It's great to help build community. It's great to organize people to do things that couldn't have happened thirty years ago without these tools. But one thing it isn't great for is someone, like me, who has ADHD.

I've started being active in my community instead of reposting things and feeling that that is active. I've started calling my representatives and going outside my house more. I've gotten involved in a way I never would have if I was stuck scrolling on my couch.

I've gotten healthier in some ways. My anxiety is easily a quarter or less than what it used to be. I've realized a lot of online squabbles really weren't anything. Everything seems so OUTSIZED online. Of course, there are plenty of things that are real issues. I've been directing my energy there.

Now that I'm using the tools instead of the tools using me, I've done so many things and feel so much better. I'm more involved in my kids' and husband's life. I'm more involved in MY life. I have read so many books I wouldn't have otherwise. I've watched old shows I always meant to get around to.

It's been about a year since I (mostly) left social media, and I thought I would reflect on it for a moment. The things I learned this year are that I've lost countless years of my life to scrolling. For real. Probably YEARS to a pointless, algorithm driven activity. The tool was using me.

So, I have been doing a terrible job of checking in on Goodreads. I have changed my mind about DMs! I will check DMs here, but I will ONLY respond publicly to book questions, so if you ask me a question and I decide to answer, I will post it.

I will check in about once a month. I'm busy writing. 💕

I've been absent from social media recently. I have been adjusting my sleep schedule. I haven't been right since LAST fall. I finally took a week to be a zombie, and now I feel really human again. It's been weird realizing lack of sleep made me an anxious mess. But I am back to my old self now!
