Loving my students in the age of generative AI β€” Suyi Davies Okungbowa Essays on generative AI that consider the inadequacy of generative AI technologies to embody or replicate the facets of human endeavour that make writing, language, communication and art as imperfect,...

On the back of a recent wave of AI shilling for use in "education", here's my second, tangential essay in the "I call bullshit" series: On not screwing over learners in my writing classroom by pretending generative AI will do them more good than harm.

Jazzy Circuit is doing a lot of PR for 3s that I suspect is missing from SF4 (or Hyper Fighting, which would be my selection as an old head). Plus sf4 has that wack old delay netcode holding it back, I think with a reissue and rollback it could get traction again

Thanks for the kind words, Joe. I remember when I first met you, you could barely do quarter circles, and now, you have one of the highest TOD averages in the scene. You've come a long way in and out of the game!

West Ada teacher stands firm after she’s told to remove β€˜Everyone is welcome here’ signs Sarah Inama said she was told by administrators that her signs β€œdon’t allow people to express differing opinions.”

A teacher in Idaho has been told to remove posters reading "Everyone is welcome here" - specifically because it features different skin tones. As I wrote last week, this is a global political movement that has explicitly set the goal of eradicating the very concept of equality.

"I can barely get into the US under the Democrats," Ismail said. "The Republicans are straight up disappearing people, mate. I'm Egyptian. I know what disappearing is: Little van shows up, gone you are. In the Republican US, they could grab me and make me go away, and nobody would be able to do shit even if they tried. I think if anyone with Western privilege would be worried about going to Egypt, they should now be equally worried about going to the US. These things are random, unfair, and without recourse."

Others, like Subnautica Below Zero, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Assassin's Creed: Freedom Cry writer Jill Murray, who is based in Montreal, are maintaining a healthy distance from the increasingly bad ol’ US of A out of senses of both solidarity and self-preservation.

"[The breaking point] was seeing how afraid trans and BIPOC friends were of crossing the border. I take it seriously and don’t really want to go where they can’t go," Murray told Aftermath. "My biggest personal factor is that I’ve been self employed for a very long time, and that can make me face more questioning. With a trade war on, it doesn’t feel like the risk is warranted – even if I’m facing mounting pressures to network, given the overall situation of the industry."

next week, game developers from all over the world will convene in san francisco for gdc, an industry centerpiece. but recent events like the abduction of a pro-palestine student, anti-trans orders, and trump's aggression toward canada have some canceling their plans

I understand. I just don't want this place to become another X where people are more concerned with shutting down worthwhile conversations than continuing them.

If someone instead were to ask, "What does it mean for CB to be part of CPT now that IWC is involved," would that be acceptable to you?

12.03.2025 15:12 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Also, I anticipated that you would make this about me because exchanges like this tend to resort to whataboutism, but I'll play along.

I agree that starting the conversation in the way you would describe might be more productive, but I think a more productive way would be to ask a question.

I simply wanted to know how you think people who were genuinely concerned by the announcement should address the matter because you offered no clear alternative to how you think this discourse should be taking place.

12.03.2025 15:12 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

By conversation, I mean the response to the announcement that the EWC is partnering with CPT, which, in turn, CB is a part of.

I agree that to infer that CB is accepting Saudi money based solely on this announcement is wrong and somewhat irresponsible, but my reply to your post was not rhetorical.

12.03.2025 15:12 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I'm sorry to hear that you find this sort of discourse exhausting, but how would you suggest people have this conversation instead? Or are you suggesting that because you believe CB has "earned the benefit of the doubt," this conversation shouldn't be happening at all?

Thou shalt not commit logical fallacies A logical fallacy is a flaw in reasoning. Logical fallacies are like tricks or illusions of thought, and they're often very sneakily used by politicians and the media to fool people. Don't be fooled! ...

One thing I'm fucken sick of hearing is that people on the poverty line "don't want handouts."

Well, the rich take hand outs. Maybe they're rich bc they were offered handouts. Maybe they're rich bc they take them.

This "shame in receiving free money" for the poor but not the rich makes me SO MAD

At the Evo Awards Jebailey was talking about people being unable to leave X because that's where the companies post

Kinda pathetic that we can't just ... get our news in other ways. Capitalism got people propping up this shit platform in the saddest ways, but also just out of sheer laziness

Or am I suggesting a false dilemma or false correlation in associating the two? I'm genuinely curious about what people think and would love to have a more nuanced discussion without the conversation devolving into the whole "fgc vs esports" dichotomy that has become such a meme.

Given the FGC's seemingly relentless pursuit of scale and its subsequent involvement with private equity, I wonder what honest conversations people are willing to have when it comes to keeping these small businesses open.

Can the FGC stay this course AND keep offline locals going? If so, how?

29.12.2024 17:31 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Not sure how or where to start this conversation, but for years, the FGC has talked about "supporting locals," but what does that actually mean or look like?

I ask this not to be rhetorical but from a place of genuine curiousity as I see more venues like A-cho, Xanadu, and Brooklyn Games closing.

At the last Jazzy Finale, we went to great lengths to soft mod nearly every cab with USB decoders that would work with everyone's input devices.

Ultimately, only two attendees used their own controllers, but we did all that work anyway because we wanted to accommodate as many players as possible.

IIRC, btran did not DQ himself but ended up playing said player offstream. Again, this is my understanding of the situation based on what I saw on stream and what was reported to me by those who were at the event.

With that said, this issue is something that Jazzy continues to address.
