Meanwhile, senior management teams are hellbent on asserting (not testing, asserting) the overwhelming virtues of generative AI for students and β€œthe student experience”. If we vacate this dispute without pragmatic pedagogic and ethical research, universities are sunk.

As an academic writing coach, here are the 7 mistakes I see supervisors and PIs make in the process of co-writing a paper with their PhD students or mentees.

Some perspective: The S&P opened down -1.3% on Trump's Greenland saber-rattling. That's $750 billion of wealth destroyed -- roughly equal to estimates of the value of Greenland.

And so ~in dollar terms~ his shenanigans have already cost the US one Greenland, and we've got nothing to show for it.

My picture was used in child abuse images. AI is putting others through my nightmare | Mara Wilson I was a child actor, exploited by strangers on the internet. Now millions of children face the same danger

I wrote about my experiences being sexually exploited as a child, and what we need to do to make sure AI doesn’t make that a reality for millions of children.

Springer Nature retracts, removes nearly 40 publications The dataset contains images of children’s faces downloaded from websites about autism, which sparked concerns at Springer Nature about consent and reliability.

Holy CRAP.

Retired engineer takes random pics of *kids*, without consent or attribution, bins them into β€œautistic” or β€œnot autistic”, and uploads that β€œdata” for free on Kaggle.

Well over a HUNDRED papers are published, 38 in Springer Nature, 25 in IEEE, using it.

And no reviewers objected? WTF.πŸ§ͺ

Pictures of a pink sea anemone sitting on top of a hermit crab shell.

Oh, I love this. A new species of sea anemone was discovered recently that parks itself on top of a hermit crab shell like a hat. It seems to feed partly off the crab's faeces, but it also excretes a hard shell that extends the crab's home. In return, it's carried around the seafloor like a king.
