POEM 314: "Winter on My Feet" by David Hanlon (@vespertine4.bsky.social)

"Yes, Iโ€™m in my head all day again.
Itโ€™s cold in hereโ€”arctic, even.
Every inward road looks identical,
erased beneath unbroken ice.

Thatโ€™s why Iโ€™m shaking."

'The poems here, hopeful and forgiving, are a balm and an antidote to the current coldness of the world. I look forward to getting happily lost in them again and again.' - Steve Denehan, author of 'A Quarter Dead and Half Alive'

In 'This Joyful Interlude' Lawrence Moore shares a tender and reflective collection of poems that explore love, memory and the quiet wonder of the natural world. With a gentle voice and vivid imagery, Moor invites readers to slow down and notice the beauty in both the outer landscape and the inner life.

From rustling leaves to quite moments of longing and reflection, these poems speak of the joys and sorrows that shape us.

A follow-up to 'Aerial Sweetshop' and 'The Breadcrumb Trail', this full-length collection marks Moore's growth as a poet, blending tradition with openness and emotional clarity.

'This Joyful Interlude' is a warm, thoughtful companion for anyone drawn to poetry that comforts, questions and uplifts.

Sleeping Foxes

When all dust has settled
on the narratives of our lives,
there shall be peace within this garden.

The ivyโ€™s creep will continue,
unimpeded,
over the paws of sleeping foxes,

whilst industrious dormice
muster in numbers,
gathering midnight treats.

Those weeds,
so thinly scattered
between the concrete
may have their day,

sunflowers sway
in a peopleless
springtime breeze.

Poem 'The Ideal' by James Fenton

We have no grand metaphors, just an insistence to say where we come from without shame.

The plain and direct language is the emotional core of the piece

He acknowledges facing your past is difficult and that the bravest thing is not reinvention, but recognition.

In the pile on consensus
With no scope for doubt
Weโ€™ve looked at our checklists
And now you are out

Thereโ€™s no room for nuance
Thereโ€™s no growth today
The mob points you out
Then throws you away

All the minutiae
Our purity tests
We think weโ€™ve got you
So now weโ€™re obsessed

What it boils down to
Is meaningless bones
To be picked over
On millions of phones

A distant landscape
A flag is unfurled
While we were distracted
Someone broke the world

Below the Buddleias

From nowhere,
neighbour s garden,
two gnomes occurred,
grinning and waving together
with their bright and bushy beards.

Perhaps they failed to appreciate
the buddleias at their feet
already plotting a path
to next year's sunshine,

for when next summer arrived,
they were good as buried;

Below the Buddleias From nowhere, neighbour s garden, two gnomes occurred, grinning and waving together with their bright and bushy beards. Perhaps they failed to appreciate the buddleias at their feet already plotting a path to next year's sunshine, for when next summer arrived, they were good as buried;

my brothers,
sisters,
cousins
came and went
not mentioning beards,
lacking the memory
for sensing
all waves beneath.

Likewise,
I am a disappearing gnome.

One day,
having watched me
disperse in smoke
from chapel chimney pot,
you will scatter my ashes
in a field of butterflies,
brandishing goodbyes,
but when you do,
cast a glance
below the buddleias
and know
I am waving too.
