Dad's Dad was a WWI artillery vet (enlisted underage), carpenter, and construction worker; he seemed to identify with his military service his whole life, went to reunions etc. Mom's Dad was a welder and basically an itinerant gig worker, but his true passion was fishing.

Started reading W. Scott Poole's Dark Carnival and the intro has quotes from people talking about how we have no future and nothing will ever get better...
