@edinatorok.bsky.social visited the iDiv Leipzig as part of a COST ‪@insectai.bsky.social‬ STSM. Together with Maximilian Sittinger, they developed a prototype of a "smart" bee hotel, a system designed to detect, track cavity-nesting bees in real time using the Insect Detect camera and software.

Revealing the Untapped Biodiversity Within Europe’s Villages A groundbreaking new study has shed light on the complex interplay between biodiversity and human well-being in European villages, revealing nuanced trade-offs and synergies shaped by landscape context and urban proximity. Despite their long-standing presence as human settlements, villages have been largely overlooked in ecological and socio-economic research compared to forests, urban centers, and agricultural landscapes. This pioneering work, led by an international team centered at the HUN-REN Centre for Ecological Research and involving twenty institutes across Hungary, Romania, Germany, and Italy, takes a holistic approach to unravel the biodiversity potential embedded in rural villages and how various landscape characteristics influence ecological and human prosperity.

Great to see @charles-cunningham.bsky.social's paper out on the impacts of woodland connectivity on the presence of woodland species in the UK. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... Although ecologists talk about connectivity being important to maintain, the evidence that this is true is weak. 1/

I have been a beekeeper and would like to be again, but getting beehives to 'Save the bees!' is like a sheep farm to support biodiversity. You can do it well and it can have positive impacts, but more domesticated animals won't save wild populations (don't @ me about sheep, struggled for metaphor)

Caught one of our Buff-tailed bumblebee queens in the act of egg laying! To start a colony, queens lay eggs inside a pocket in/on a pollen ball so that larvae have direct access to plenty of food when they hatch. Amazed by the deft and speed with which she applies wax to close the egg pocket!
