I think it was Linkβs Awakening. I went to buy a GBC with Pokemon Red but the game wasnβt in stock so I saw LA and figured I liked OoT so should give it a try.

Capcom cooked with 2D Zelda. Definitely would recommend the Oracle games. FSA is also underrated and deserves more love.

Majora's Mask. I loved roaming in Termina and Clock Town while listening to the music, since I was clueless about what to do first and played on files that had one or more temples cleared. I was a kid back then.

Either Minish Cap or A Link Between Worlds, because they are among the best 2D Zeldas.

Oracle of Seasons. If you can survive the occasional difficulty spikes, it's sheer perfection on a gameplay level.

I actually don't know! π€
I got Zelda (NES) when it came out in 1987.
I got Link's Awakening (GB) in 1993.
I have a used copy of Zelda II that I bought in the 90s, but I think it was later.
Never had a SNES.
So... I guess it's the incredible Game Boy game! π₯°π©Ά

I remember being about 5 years old and renting Zelda II because of how much I loved ALTTP.
Somehow, I vaguely remember specifically getting to the room with the first key in Parapa Palace.
Didn't play the game again until I was a teenager.

I remember when Majoras Mask released my brother and I spent the whole day trying to find an expansion pak in town. OoT introduced me to Zelda but MM elevated my love and appreciation for the world building side of this universe to a different level. Life changing game.

A Link to the Past for the GBA, courtesy of a buddy from elementary school. Whenever I got stuck, I would ask him the next day at school how to progress. I still remember I was stuck in the first room of the Eastern Temple... Because I forgot about lifting pots π

Strangers. Link growing up with a connection to royalty makes the world feel smaller, and I love the thought of Zelda being all, "Sure, I guess this random country bumpkin is gonna save the world."
I also don't ship them romantically, but I've never found any appeal in romantic ships in general.

I like strangers crossing paths and wish that trope was explored more in a modern game. Ties into me wanting a lone wandering hero again.

Childhood friends is great when you want them to already have a strong bond from start and perhaps move to implying a romance like Skyward Sword, but I like the destiny of two strangers that meet and during the adventure itself create that connection that brings them close.
