A baby roughskin newt sits in my hand, before being moved off the road into the forest. The newt is about 8cm long, burgundy on top and bright orange beneath, but so small its toes are translucent. The top half of its eye gleams gold like a dragon. This is a photo from several autumns ago.

A newt for those that need one.

Since I keep getting asked, I tried pressure cooking camas. Did it work? Sort of....
Some years ago I cooked some test bulbs in a water bath (sous vide) and while they cooked they didn't taste very good
That's my impression of the pressure cooked camas, done but not very good

My dishwasher claims to have an ai cycle 🤷‍♀️. I expect it is much more like the "sensor dry" cycle on my ancient clothes dryer than any kind of machine learning.

I had the privileged, quite some years ago, to cook a batch of camas for the Swinimish Senate, just before they launched their own food camas program.

I love camas, and always feel honored to get to work with it. We have been experimenting with growing it in modern garden beds for about a decade.

It's late for harvesting it (you can see the bulbs sprouting), I more commonly harvest it in the fall, but I've cooked it in October, May, and July and it is always sweet.

I'm helping host a session on Indigenous plants at the local agricultural summit (the actual speakers are Coast Salish) and since we grow camas I offered to bring some for folks to taste.

Camassia leichtlinii (more commonly known as great camas), actually in the Asparagaceae. They were the staple crop of Native Coast Salish families here until around 200 years ago. They store their energy as inulin, so to make them digestible I'm going to slow cook them 36-48 hours.
