For years, Greece has denied the existence of this practice. Today’s @ECHR_CEDH
ruling is first step in achieving justice for all people subjected to summary, often violent, returns at the EU's borders.

In 2021, @amnesty.org concluded that pushbacks were Greece's de facto border policy. Survivors' stories indicated that they were subsequently subjected to further violations, as their right to an individual assessment or the possibility to challenge their return were not granted.

The Court found that the applicant’s summary return to Türkiye, “without any prior assessment of the risks she faced […] and therefore of her application for international protection” violated her rights. The court also found the Greek authorities’ investigation was ineffective.

In a landmark ruling, @ECHR_CEDH concludes that there is “serious evidence suggesting” a practice of systematic #pushbacks by the #Greek authorities from Evros region to #Türkiye, something that @amnesty and other NGOs have been saying for years.

Germany pauses asylum applications for Syrians after fall of Assad Germany's Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) has put all asylum applications from Syrian nationals on hold until further notice after the toppling Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, an Interior Ministry spokesperson said on Monday.

The situation in Syria following the ousting of President Bashar al-Assad is still unclear. Hasty decisions or changes in practice with respect to refugee status and pending processes for asylum or other forms of protection should be avoided.
