to me, Gundam and Star Trek feel like Asimov/Heinlein/Clarke Golden Age of Science Fiction, whereas Star Wars feels like John Carter of Mars pulp. So I'd agree Gundam is closer to Trek

Yeah early on the pitches for Gundam were "what if Zambot 3 AND Yamato, blended together" and having seen both shows you can really see how they were thinking that when they did Gundam. In the earliest behind-the-scenes Gundam stuff, they barely seem to have had anything beyond that specific concept

the "Gundam is Japan's Star Wars" statement has always been about cultural impact to me, I see Gundam as being much more Star Trek (primarily a long running set of TV series, set in the future of our world, tackles classic sci-fi questions, large "crew" + focus on character relations and drama)
