This is a stain on all of us. It is a grave desecration of the very lives lost on October 7. This is no way to honor the dead. It is a betrayal of their memory and of our shared humanity.

The conditions are catastrophic: tens, perhaps hundreds, of thousands of Palestinian lives taken, families erased, survivors concentrated in camps, mass starvation inflicted, homes reduced to rubble, the systems that sustain life, education, healthcare, water, & shelter, systematically annihilated.

We grieve, with bitter pain, that the memory of those lives continues to be used not to heal, but to harm – weaponized to justify the Israeli military’s genocidal campaign against Palestinians in Gaza and beyond.

Of course it is proper to be disappointed and upset when a leader who is relatively ideologically close to you takes an adverse action on something you care about.

But if most of your energy goes to slamming a leader who’s in the 95th percentile on your issue, you are failing in your mission.

What may it mean for us?

If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, and if you spend yourselves on behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.

Is this the kind of fast that I have chosen, only a day for people to humble themselves? Is it only for bowing one’s head like a reed and for lying in sackcloth and ashes? Is that what you call a fast, a day acceptable to The One?

Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please and exploit all your workers. Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife, and in striking each other with wicked fists. You cannot fast as you do today and expect your voice to be heard on high.

Your fast is no good in the eyes of The Eternal if you fail to rise up against oppression. So the prophet Isaiah tells us, in a passage that is quoted in the Yom Kippur liturgy:

“Why have we fasted,” they say, “if you have not seen it? Why have we humbled ourselves, if you have not noticed?”
