In other games, this principle is used in various flavors to suit the game. 3D fighting games usually use volumes like cylinders. Knowing your hurtbox well in a shmup (in Ketsui the player hurtbox is 2x3 pixels, in the ship center) will be the difference between life and death.

Displacement gets you other distinct behaviors. You'll likely encounter disjointed attacks where the hitbox and hurtbox are partially or completely separated from each other. This creates an effect of making certain attacks invincible against certain options like those with low-hitting hitboxes. 5/7

Time! Certain boxes are always active, most others around attacks are only active for the duration of that attack.
Some attacks in Street Fighter 6 have lingering hurtboxes: hurtboxes that stay active after the hitboxes deactivate. This makes whiff punishing easier. 4/7
