Today is UNESCO #InternationalMotherLanguageDay. We are sharing this 1962 #NYCsubway multilingual courtesy campaign poster. The poster is an early example of language-inclusive signage in transit, and marks the beginning of public service announcements geared toward New York's diverse communities.

Also the majority of low income riders will use the subway after the bus, regardless. So it’s not clear how this would save riders money if they don’t change their travel patterns!

Excellent point. Exactly why expanding fair fares is wya more important since those would apply to the subway as well as buses

Transit folks: does anyone have something to reference for the time value of money? I want to calculate at what income level a person would choose one route over another if their expected earnings were taken into account (e.g.: when is an extra 30 that saves $20 worth it).

If you want to feel like a skilled negotiator all you have to do is tell your current provider that the competitor is offering a lower price. I did it and my current provider offered me lower than what I claimed the competitor was offering πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Here’s a video of my talk about estimating NYC Subway Ridership from last Wednesday. Please let me know if you have any ideas on how to improve the analysis!

The embassies in Trieste are so beautiful β€” even by italian standards. Definitely more of a residential feel to the embassies to my American eyes. I remember seeing somewhat smaller/less influential countries’ embassies being there (nordics, some African countries)

Camacho fills the air of every CB (sub)committee he decides to enter that day. The number of times a moderator has to remind him to share the floor is astounding

Say what you want about the JFK Air Train but I’ve never seen a more clear description of frequencies of service in NYC. I put that above my project trying to explain the frequencies of the NYC subway as well!

I’m doing a write up on how poor the connection is between Metro-North and Bee-Line. Even some of the high ridership lines (once an hour) have zero coordination with Metro-North. Not only is it expensive, it’s inconvenient!

Do you have any idea how many trains the station sees each day? It's interesting to see the delta in how nice a station is and how much service it gets

The closest to this we have is the ends of R211 transits where there's a lean to one of the walls. Personally I like it but I wonder what the average NYer thinks about it

And yet my 311 complaint about this issue this morning was closed without anyone taking a look (I was staring at a car parked there). I live about a mile from the Ridgewood fire, too…

Hey Reddit: why are some Metro-North trains faster going outbound than going inbound?

24.12.2025 16:13 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I totally agree. The trick is getting as much of the infrastructure to be as inoperable as possible (e.g.: the height and length of platforms). In practice, it looks like it’s pretty difficult.

Yes. The the origin-destination dataset gives averages between station pairs by hour and day of week. You can roll that up to the total system averages.

I see a lot of cars parked on the sidewalk, especially outside of firehouses, so it could definitely cause damage but shouldn’t be impossible
