When ICE agents questioned a group of 11- to 14-year-olds who’d just finished batting practice, their coach, Youman Wilder, stepped in. “I’m willing to die to make sure these kids can get home,” he recounted afterward.

Stopped by the California African American Museum (CAAM) this weekend and checked out their excellent exhibits including works by Nellie Mae Rowe, An Ode to ‘Dena featuring artists from Altadena, Awol Erizku: X, and the Repossessions exhibit.

During the wildfires in LA, it was infuriating to see folks from outside the city, region, state just jump in with their hot takes, conspiracy theories, & I told you so’s while folks were still trying to find their family members.

Family and friends are rallying to protect the victim from detainment.

I know if this was happening in another country, I would say we should boycott. Now it’s happening in my country…the world should boycott.

It's my final month serving on the Mid City West Neighborhood Council, but I am as resolved as ever to ensure this neighborhood remains safe and welcoming for everyone, regardless of their immigration status.

Here are some important rights to know and understand which have been provided by the city. Please share these and translate them as you can: Know Your Rights: Whether you are at work, home or in your community, it's important that all Angelenos know their rights and are prepared when interacting with law enforcement - including immigration agents. 1. If officers ask you questions, you have the right to say: "I choose to remain silent." 2. You have the right to consult with an attorney before answering any questions or signing any documents. 3. If you have valid U.S.immigration documents, carry them with you. Never carry false documents or lie about your immigration status. 4. No law enforcement officer can enter your home without your permission unless that officer has a warrant signed by a judge. An administrative warrant from the Department of Homeland Security does not give officers the right to enter your home against your will.

I join the Mayor, City Council, city leaders, union leaders, and community members in expressing my deepest outrage and concern at the immigration raids, militarized tactics, and terror experienced by Los Angeles.

We will not stand for this.

And sometimes I'll laugh, remembering the ways that Leland took up space in this world, for a brief but incredible time, making people smile, making them think, making them believe in themselves and others, and making people laugh.

Sometimes I'll be driving and a memory will hit me.

Sometimes I'll smile and nod, a reminder of a great person.

Sometimes I'll turn up the song, a tribute to an eclectic taste.

Sometimes I'll go silent, thinking of moments and conversations.

And sometimes, Leland's ability to speak out just made you laugh. The out loud from the belly kind of laugh. Aside from being a practical joker and full of Dad jokes, Leland was always quick with a comeback and ready to fill an uncomfortable (or comfortable) silence with a joke or four.

As a lot of his friends remember, Leland wasn't afraid to speak out. Sometimes it inspired you to be a better friend, a better person. Sometimes it made you look inward, at an age when many of us weren't necessarily ready or mature enough to do so.

He was an old soul & at the same time always two steps ahead, learning about trends, adapting and growing with the times. He understood the implications of national & international politics & was not afraid to speak up and out in defense of change, in defense of the defenseless.

24 years ago, the world became a dimmer place when we lost the brilliant light and spark of Leland Rioth.

As many of us remember him, and as we have passed on to our loved ones and friends since then, Leland was a thoughtful, forward thinking, inclusive, and fiercely supportive friend.
