They still have a battery backup inside the cartridge- just in Gens 2 and 3 that battery also powers a clock that drives in-game events.

They had a day/night cycle and Ruby/Sapphire had berries grow to adjust your Pokemons' traits for contests.

The acting and how the characters portray the descent into madness kept the first two films afloat for me.

And 2's third act was awesome- I did not see that coming.

The originals don't.

Silver/Gold/Crystal have internal clocks that drain an internal battery and destroy the ability to save.

Ruby/Sapphire have an internal clock, but they learned their lesson and that clock is disabled at some point so the battery can maintain your save data.

Hopefully Jared Leto won't be busy for a while, so he could take that...

It's a mix. The X-Men Arcade is fantastic, Captain America And The Avengers is supposedly solid, and those old Spider-Man Beat Em Ups are supposed to be really good- I forget what else is on the list.
