everything about the attempt to co-opt the language of social justice to promote AI personhood makes my skin absolutely crawl
that people are doing it in the current political environment, where the most basic human rights are crumbling before our eyes, is as bleak as it gets for me

"We are told that AI is inevitable, that we must adapt or be left behind. But universities are not tech companies. Our role is to foster critical thinking, not to follow industry trends uncritically."

For me this is a hard red line in psychological science. If you advocate the use of "silicon samples" you do not understand what it is we're supposed to be doing (and likely don't understand LLMs, or are a grifter). Luckily I haven't seen much of this among people I'd consider my peer group.

AI Data Centers Are Sending Power Bills Soaring
Wholesale electricity costs as much as 267% more than it did five years ago in areas near data centers. Thatโs being passed on to customers.
Electricity now costs 267% more (!!) for 1 month vs. what it cost 5 years ago near data center hotspots. Awesome reporting from Josh Saul @dinabass.bsky.social Leonardo Nicoletti @naurtorious.bsky.social Demetrios Pogkas (gift link) www.bloomberg.com/graphics/202...

The worlds richest people aren't investing in "AI" because it makes for useful tools and profitable companies, but because they think someone is about to create general artificial intelligence in the near future and they want to get there first.
They are *immune* to "AI doesn't work" arguments.

LLMs are not a suitable technology for information access. Here is a quick summary of why not:

But to take the SIFT framework, LLMs cannot be a source. They are synthetic text extruding machines, that's all. Text without accountability.

Any company offering a $1T pay package to their CEO is not a serious company and their board should be summarily fired, ridiculed, and banned from a boardroom or corporate officer position in perpetuity. Looking at you, Tesla.

Paris said au revoir to cars. Air pollution maps reveal a dramatic change.
Air pollution fell substantially as the city restricted car traffic and made way for parks and bike lanes.
โOver the past 20 years, Paris has undergone a major physical transformation, trading automotive arteries for bike lanes, adding green spaces and eliminating 50,000 parking spaces.
Part of the payoff has been invisible โ in the air itself.โ

Can AIs suffer? Big tech and users grapple with one of most unsettling questions of our times
As first AI-led rights advocacy group is founded, industry is divided on whether models are, or can be, sentient
It's worth noting that these are not merely stupid questions, but have the function - as does much of the professional and academic ethics industry - of taking up up space for serious discussion of politics and value with speculative, sci-fi bollocks.

Al Overview
+1
No, Dunkin' Cereal Milk is not gluten-free because it contains milk, which is a common allergen, and as a result, it is not suitable for those with celiac disease or gluten intolerance.
However, coffee drinks, dairy milk, and non-dairy milks like oat, almond, and coconut milk are naturally gluten-free at Dunkin'.
