I'll limit character numbers, I promise.

Steel loves his work. He's a gardener/handyman, building his custom furniture sideline. He built the business from scratch and loves his life.

Jon loves the martial arts that form his daily routine. They're his grounding, sanity, and accomplishment in one.

I have 2 characters, Leo and Albie, who don't like each other, but share a passion for household management (each to their own🤷). It's not the tasks themselves, it's the feeling of everything in their worlds being in order and under control. The accomplishment and satisfaction of a job well done.

Quetzal are geniuses at hydroponics, as they have been living inside their planet since their star died, navigating it powered by an artificial internal sun.

So, the whole planet ship is a jungle environment.

And most Mycelium ships have a lot of Quetzal tech and plants.

Michael from "Digital Decadence" loved to make the virtual world of the 1920s as authentic as possible even though other virtual architects took short cuts (wrong lighting fictures in a store), resulting in noticeable bugs. #writingq #writesky #writingcommunity

Being right. Virgil loves being right. Partly this is just being male. 😆 But mainly, it's because his self worth is entirely based on being useful to others.

Even finally kissing Lucifer pales next to being right that his cinnamon scent means his skin is spicy like cinnamon.

Melody loves music.
Lyra loves just being alive (she's died a couple times and sees life as something very precious).

Music. Alec is a musician. Playing guitar is what settles him, even if it is death metal.

I'd say the forest, but that's too easy. Besides the forest, alone time. Alone time is very important to Parker.

The funeral home was picked out decades ago, likely because it was cheap.

I lifted the description of the place, the driver, the cannoli they served for the reception after, and the suspicion that it was a mob front for "Hell Is Work."

Oscar (104 yrs old) would have laughed his ass off.

Oh, yeah.

At an in-laws funeral the escort was the most aggressive driver I've ever seen.

He passed people on the shoulder of the one ramp, got onto the freeway, and PARKED. In front of a SEMI.

He crossed lanes of traffic to drive people away.

Only a cop and/or mob driver would be that bold.

Unlikely. I don't like featuring cops in general.

Maurice is an exception because he's quite funny and based on what I assume was an ex-cop that worked for a shady as hell seeming business.

Maurice's police chief I had sent to confront Cyrus after he broke in to the gas station.

Virgil confronts him again later and I realized I should just combine the scenes and cut out the chief.

I didn't cut all his scenes, but it may come to that.

Ooh, one difference though: the first scene I will write is usually not the beginning.

Usually I write a "test" scene to see if the characters want to talk. The spicy ones especially.

I give them their names and then turn them loose. If it flows easy, then I've got it

Thinking about Micah Harlow from Sweet & Wild today and did this fun little character challenge!

Draft in order. I don't know what happens or who the characters are going to be until I get there.

Edit either way. Short works can be in order more, but long works it's maddening doing it in order because you don't feel progress.

Yes. 🤣 The fact it's a carbon sink is really useful too. It's twice or something better at scrubbing CO2 than trees.

My mushroom spaceships are going to have grove rooms as part of the oxygen scrubbers.

Grass nymphs don't mind as much because cutting down bamboo doesn't kill it.

Otherwise people would be swarmed for mowing the grass all the time. 😆

Meadow nymphs are much chiller. 😆 Mainly because you don't kill a grass when you trim it, and bamboo is no different there.

It solves a *ton* of problems because it grows so fast and is so fibrosus.

Some can grows 1.5 inches in a hour.

Also good for horrific imperilment because you get stuck above bamboo and it will keep growing and impale you. 😬
