This has been kicking around my head all day. I think I agree with Kirk in the OG context of this remark. Almost every time I have heard empathy used, it has been to dismiss someone on the grounds of not having empathy, rather than putting in the effort to understand where they are coming from.

I don't have a lot of skin in the game or anything. I am not religious, for example, but if someone has been talking in front of a camera for 10 years straight, there is bound to be plenty of stuff one can take out of context.

I believe that is taken out of context. I am no expert on stuff Kirk has said, but I have seen similar arguments made with regard to letting drug addicts die on the street out of "empathy" rather than forcing them into rehab.

Regardless of whether one shares this view or not (the fact that there are very few countries that have had stability for longer than the US is pretty hard to argue with), it's not fair to lay gun deaths at the feet of those who believe it, even if they are wrong.

However, although other countries benefit from the deterrent effect of potential US retaliation, the US itself does not have that luxury. So the argument goes that there is an inherent trade-off between the probability of a Hitler, Mussolini, etc., etc., etc. and the sad losses due to guns.

Some also argue that after the breton woods order, there is essentially an inherent "tyrant veto" in most countries in that the US or a coalition will come in and change a tyrannical regime, which may have had mixed results in practice, but the threat has a deterrent effect.

...There is an inherent threat of being taken over by a tyrant or king. History shows this almost always happens and is quite hard to shake off again. Many of these tyrants were voted in or rigged elections. The inherent problem is that one votes on a promise; guns are a costly veto of the result.

I believe he is arguing that there is an inherent trade-off, which is not the same as being OK with the negative effects. To steelman the pro-second amendment stance, regardless of whether it is right or not, this is an attempt at framing the trade off as they see it...

Not trying to be adversarial or anything, I just think condoning political violence leads to terrible places, regardless of who the political violence is aimed at.

Charlie Kirk, he is an American political/religious podcaster. But it doesn't really matter who; political violence is just not something to be happy about, which is the point I was making.

Not ruling out an algorithm bug, but literally 20% of my feed is people who seem happy about it, including some people I know, with 0% push back. Shocking.

If you are happy that a decent person was shot simply because you disagree with them, then you are not in a healthy place. Try to find the humanity that I am sure you have in you.
