For many of us mobility devices, chronic pain, sensory overwhelm, low-car households, winter maintenance determines whether we can leave home at all.
If you notice a snow barrier that blocks someoneβs movement, report it.
Those calls change routes, timelines, and priorities.
But why is it -18C and I'm still sweating (oh it's the giant hill I need to climb π)

Dedicated π²πΆ weather stations & cameras in Oulu give a peek at traffic & maintenance. Snowβs been falling for hours now, and this path has already been plowed twice today, before 01:30am. This camera managed to snap someone casually pedalling at 1:30, just one of many enjoying the 24/7 maintenance π€

WINTER WEDNESDAY: SAFE ROUTES DONβT DISAPPEAR IN WINTER
Kids walking, rolling, or bussing to school still need clear ramps, safe crossings, and accessible bus stops β even when the snow piles up.
If you see a spot thatβs unsafe or blocked: report it.
It helps keep your school route connected.
Winter reminds us that accessibility isnβt optional, itβs essential!
Blocked ramps, snowed-in bus stops, and buried crosswalk buttons can completely cut people off from daily life.
If you spot an accessibility barrier report it

If someone says βpeople donβt bike here,β
Ask:
Is the network connected?
Are crossings safe and intuitive?
Is snow cleared? Gravel, sand and debris swept?
Are speeds managed?
Do we need time to build trust the area again?
Would you feel comfortable cycling here?

Iβm good in emergency mode. Whatβs harder is what comes after... when the flames are out and youβre standing in whatβs left. Many of us are only an accident, illness, or a few missed paychecks from losing our footing. Iβm still building, with care, grief, and deep gratitude for a community

Community work doesnβt disappear when disruption hits β it rebuilds.
Iβm restoring the capacity to keep doing accessible, people-powered transportation work after a major loss.
Grateful for any support or shares.

Read @bicyclemayorguelph.bsky.social & my short stories reimagining Guelph with great pedestrian, cycling, and transit in winter! Was a really fun project!

where sidewalks, bike lanes, and transit werenβt seasonal favours but essential infrastructure. Where safety was designed in, not argued for. They show the human consequences of todayβs choices and the futures those choices quietly build.

So instead of debating snow budgets in the abstract, @cgreysongaito.bsky.social l and I told stories at the transportation summit with @taaguelph.bsky.social and @activeguelph.bsky.social
We imagined winter in a city that chose differently and have followed up with our written versions....
Policy tells us what exists.
Storytelling lets us imagine what could.
When we canβt picture a future, we default to survival mode with short-term decisions, false trade-offs, βgood enough for now,β "save a few dollars where we can." Cities do this too.

Iβm rebuilding from scratch after losing everything in a fire. That includes the materials and tools I have built up over the years to run free, inclusive community spaces as Bicycle Mayor and as a 2SLGBTQIA community leader.
