I did, for several years. But don’t remember it being affiliated with USC. Why do you ask?

It’s my hometown! We’re gonna have some fun.

This is how I got interested in data—specifically unstructured data. And I learned about NLP, which wasn’t very good yet. We started using social tools to try to sort the posts into positive, negative and neutral. But it was a pretty blunt instrument.

Then I asked for names of our clients’ competitors. More hands. More questions. More insights.

So I went to the staff meeting and asked my colleagues to name a client—any client. I found product complaints, compliments, gossip about the founders and funding, requests to buy/sign up—all sorts of treasures they could bring back to their clients.

This is how I got interested in data—specifically unstructured data. And I learned about NLP, which wasn’t very good yet. We started using social tools to try to sort the posts into positive, negative and neutral. But it was a pretty blunt instrument.
