Rate-time scaling in phenotypic evolution: Limitations of current models in capturing temporal dynamics Abstract. Evolutionary rates correlate negatively with time, which makes it complicated to compare rates across lineages that have diversified on different

More on rate-scaling in phenotypic evolution, pointing toward biological explanations, from Brune Kinneberg & Voje. Lots of debate about this pattern, but comes down to how we define "noise" vs. "biology" as represented in models. Important philosophical discussion.

Is it possible to estimate rates of phenotypic evolution that are independent of the time interval covered by the data? In theory, yes β€” even when the data are incomplete and biased. But in practice? Not so much. Amazing work by @vildebruhn.bsky.social

Tree evolution is surprisingly quirky! 🌳 Trees are likely ancestral in many plant groups, often re-evolve on islands, and Arabidopsis can be made tree-like by tweaking a few genes. We revisited what genes really make a tree a tree using comparative genomics. @trhvidsten.bsky.social #trees #evolution

Loss of macroevolutionary species fitness explains the rise and fall of clades - Nature Ecology & Evolution The interplay between speciation and extinction rates shapes clade diversity dynamics. Excited to share our new paper where we find that the rise, decline and fall of clades is not explained by the usual suspects (diversity-dependence, ecological opportunities) but rather by species' insidious loss of macroevolutionary fitness: www.nature.com/articles/s41... 1/3

Enough. Ceasefire. Open all crossings, north and south. Let us get food in, unimpeded and at massive scale.

The white noise model is a statistical interpretation of stasis, which distinguishes it from a random walk process.

Stasis is defined as trait evolution similar to a white noise process (variation around a fixed mean). There is no cut-off for how much variation the trait mean can fluctuate around the steady state, so time series that fit stasis can actually show significant evolution (but with low net evolution).
