I’m remembering why I wanted to be in this industry in the first place. I’m excited to get back on set. I can’t wait to sink my teeth into another character

Right now I’m challenging myself for the month of august to watch one film a day and I can’t fucking wait.

In the last few months I’ve been on a big physical media trip and getting my butt to the theatre at least once a week. I’ve pretty much done away with all subscription based platforms, if it wasn’t for Liverpool I’d cancel them all.

And I’m falling in love with cinema again.

I just work because I should be working, not because I LOVE our medium. I read scripts because I have to reply to the email, not because I’m excited to tell another story. I can’t relate to an audience member being enthusiastic for whatever film or show I’m in.

Whatever the reason, film/tv post 2014 drove me to keep auditioning despite the constant rejection. To keep the dream alive no matter how silly it looked - earning no money and living with my parents for far longer than I should have. That inspiration and motivation is gone, and I feel nothing.

I’m not sure if it’s because of being on set and seeing how the sausage is made? The magic is gone for me? Or the age of streaming where film and tv more closely resemble content on YouTube than a good old fashioned movie you rented or just bought from the store.

I’ve been an “actor” since I was about 20 (after leaving drama school) but I wasn’t a “working actor” until iZOMBiE in 2014.

One thing that changed in me in the last decade of working is, I’ve fallen out of love with TV and film. I’d been consuming both religiously since I was a boy.

It’s criminal just how few Paul Thomas Anderson movies are available to buy on 4K. I think the only two are Punch Drunk Love and Phantom Thread. I WANT THERE WILL BE BLOOD, BOOGIE NIGHTS, MAGNOLIA, THE MASTER ETC!
