Man contracts rabies from donated organ infected with fatal disease The CDC revealed the case in a new report published Thursday, stating the man received a left kidney from a donor from Idaho in December 2024.

A Michigan man has died of rabies after contracting it through a transplanted kidney.

The Donor Risk Assessment Interview questionnaire reported that the donor has been scratched by a skunk.

He then developed symptoms of rabies & died in hospital.

It seems odd he was permitted to donate organs:

Repeated exposure to frustration in low-stakes settings helps build a tolerance over time. But changing the way you think about things can help too - drawing is a process, not just a finished product, and it becomes a lot less frustrating when you focus enjoying the process.

A little pink fairy armadillo in two human hands, against a background of intensely green grass.

The environmental challenges of the 'pichiciegos', as they're called in Argentina, are about thermoregulation.

High day temps and low night temps require special adaptation, and the highly vascularized armor plates can act as a thermal exchange to dump heat during day, absorb it at night.

Pink fairy armadillos (or pichiciegos) are found in the warm sandy plains of Argentina. These armadillos prefer to burrow in very dry soil. They leave their burrows if it is moistened by rainfall. These animals often burrow near anthills, so that they can be close to their food source. The pink fairy armadillo generally lives by itself. The animals stay in their burrrows during the day and feed at night. They are remarkable diggers. The pink fairy armadillo is the smallest member of the armadillo family, measuring only about five to six inches in length. It is also the only armadillo in which the dorsal shell is almost separate from the body. Baby armadillos resemble their parents, but their shells do not completely harden until they are full grown

The pink fairy armadillo (Chlamyphorus truncatus) is just this little guy.

The smallest of the armadillo family, they live in the deserts of Argentina, burrowing through dry sand with giant paws, almost as fast as a fish can swim.

The armor is greatly reduced, but the pink fairy has THICK FUR.

I really want to play Deltarune on our CRT just to see what it looks like on there, but I don't have the right adaptor for it. Feels frivolous to get one just for that but I keep considering it.

You can’t tell if someone is disabled just by looking at them.

There’s no such thing as the “genuinely disabled”.

You are not entitled to a person’s entire medical history just so you can decide whether to believe them or not.

People are not faking disability, most are trying to fake being well.

The USPS posting a NINE BILLION DOLLAR LOSS!!! sounds terrible. Certainly worse than if you said "USPS costs thirty dollars per person per year" even though that means the same thing and more accurately describes a government service

I would definitely recommend tolumnia orchids for orchid beginners. They need a little more humidity than moth orchids so I keep mine in a more contained mini-greenhouse, and I dilute their fertilizer a little more too. If you can manage the humidity, they're at least as easy as moth orchids.

To my friends from LiveJournal

I still think about you Wonder if you finally quit, Do you still speak to your mom?

I remember when you went to Japan How you swore you'd never forgive him.

I can't remember to take my meds but I remember you wanted to live on a houseboat. It's a strange intimacy, all of us unspooling across decades of internet space Like balls of yarn leaving a trail behind us of everywhere and everyone we've ever been

I hope you got your houseboat.

I hope you got everything.

My other tolumnia isn't blooming, but it has a different pot situation. Since this one likes this pot so much, I'll switch the other one to a similar pot and substrate soon and see how it does. I'm so happy I was able to figure out a good environment for these guys!

One of my tolumnia orchids is making a flower spike! I've never seen this one bloom before so I don't even know what color the flowers will be! I'm new to caring for these types of orchids, and this is the first time I've had one bloom under my own care.
