04.09.2025 15:06 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Older adult wearing a beanie and blue jacket, standing outdoors with a thoughtful expression. Text overlay reads, 'I don't see myself retiring.' Our new research exposes the harsh reality of Britain's housing crisis for older people.
An older individual looks contemplatively out a window with text stating that nearly 50% of older people on lower incomes say they would have nowhere to go if they lost their home.
An individual works with tools in a workshop, with text stating 'Nearly 1 in 5 said they wanted to retire but couldn't because of their housing costs.'
An older woman washing her hands in a kitchen, with text overlay stating, 'Nearly 1 in 10 older renters fear they will be at risk of homelessness by the end of the year.'
π©FACT: 47% of older people on low incomes would have nowhere to go if they lost their home.
New research by Crisis shows the housing crisis is driving older people on lower incomes towards homelessness - many forced to delay retirement or make tough choices to keep their homes. 1/2
Councils will spend just 5.6% of their social care budgets on prevention this year, compared to 8.4% in 2019-20

Between them those 5 built c. 64,000 homes, around a third of the total additional homes.
A further 13 developers built between 1,000 and 5,000 homes (totalling c. 32,000).

Good to see some positive movements in quarterly homelessness stats - assessments down and positive prevention/relief compared to previous quarter, but numbers in temporary accommodation still climbing and overall homelessness picture worse than year ago. www.gov.uk/government/s...

Graph showing median re-let time for new lettings in existing social stock, 2007/08 to 2023/24 from Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government Social housing lettings in England, 2023/24: COntinuous REcording (CORE) data. Re-let was pretty consistent until covid (21 days), then shot up to 28 days and is only slowly starting to climb down from 30 in 2022/23 to 29 in 2023/24. Re-let time for local authorities is particularly high (43 days for general needs at social rent in 2023/24), though not sure how much non-response by local authorities to CORE affects this.
Doing some analysis of CORE data (which does have some challenges in terms of quality and response), and interested to hear thoughts on the median re-let time for homes.
What is driving re-let times in your organisations? What are you doing to manage this? Anything successful that you're proud of?
Local Housing Allowance was set last year using data on rents collected from September 2022-September 2023. Since then rents have gone up around 17%, leaving a huge gap to be paid out of people's remaining benefits or earnings. www.ons.gov.uk/economy/infl...

New MHCLG stats show child #Homelessness & #RoughSleeping continue to soar:
164k kids in temp accommodation (up 16%)
4,667 people rough sleeping (up 20%)
This is no way to live or for a child to grow up - a result of years of cuts & policy failure
We need a #PlanForHousing
One bit of good news in general gloom about homelessness: the number of families with children living in bed and breakfasts beyond the six-week legal limit fell 8% in latest quarter (the first 'Labour' one). Still 3,470 of them though, 21 times higher than in 2010
