Everyone is celebrating him for his (obviously wonderful) songs but I am also celebrating him for releasing all his works into the public domain and insisting he retained no copyrights over any of it.

Learning Tom Lehrer and Stephen Sondheim knew each other from childhood summer camp forces me to imagine a conversation in which they both said, “I’m going to be the best there ever was at the kind of songs I will write,” and they were both correct.

[P] I can’t really overstate how important Tom Lehrer’s work was to me and to helping shape me as a writer and performer. He was a true one of a kind. I mourn his passing but celebrate all the musical gifts he left us.
