That old saw about the goose that lays golden eggs seems really apt here. They're slaughtering these geese wholesale, trying to probe their innards for the gold-making mechanism. Even when they see it, they don't recognize it and they don't value it.

But the audience doesn't want products. The audience wants meaningful and significant experiences.

I dunno. It's depressing, the way these people have wrecked so many studios -- and so many lives -- and are now picking the carcass apart, eternally questing for their profits.

You see the same kind of attitude in various AAA pc/console games: certain studios churn out hugely expensive games that are sent out to die, because they have no identity other than "product to beat <market leader>". The people in charge don't understand that nobody is excited about that.

A lot of the business failures of the games industry are really rooted in this desire to create a product that dominates the market. The recent Amazon thing really highlights that: they wanted to create a product that outperformed Steam, but they didn't understand Steam or what the audience wanted.
