Assistant Professor of Political Science at CU Boulder. Immigration Politics. Director of the Barney Ford Lab.
Almost half of Britons (47%) mistakenly believe that migration to the UK is primarily illegal rather than legal.
This view is held by 72% of those who support requiring large numbers of migrants to leave

47% of people think immigration is primarily illegal. There were 4% irregular arrivals in March
New YouGov polling. A monumental failure of our political class to educate, a monumental failure of our media to report fairly, for a generation

Is the elite experiments still ongoing? Last I heard from them was COVID.
03.08.2025 19:38 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I vaguely know there is a DC area group. I assume southern universities have something?
Also, perhaps most important, who do Hawaii scholars hang out with?
Socal has the socal behavior conference and the PIPE conferences.
Is the Chicago area behavior conference still a thing?
Is there a public listing of the various political science mini conferences?
Off the top of my head you have PRIEC, SPIRE and MARGIE for REP folks.
There is the Four Corner Political Psychology Conference, Four Corners Conflict Network, and FRPSA in the mountain west.
I will never recover from the COVID market. Has it been 5 years already?

I'm hiring another postdoc (research-focused, for almost 5 years) for my @erc.europa.eu project on the educational cleavage!
I'm looking for someone with strong quantitative text-analysis skills (e.g. #NLP, #LLM, etc.) to study the role of political actors in cleavage formation.

24.07.2025 20:15 β π 6 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0I know I am preaching to the choir, but I think it's important to remember what higher ed represents - merit based social mobility - and why it's worth protecting.
24.07.2025 14:27 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Academia isn't perfect of course. There is a hidden curriculum and lots of old boys networking. Notwithstanding, it is possible for a hard working person with merit to rise up the ranks.
What other institutions allow for social mobility like that? The only other I can think of is the military.
Among other things, what bothers me about the attack on higher ed is that it is one of the few ways to climb up socially. It doesn't matter if you come from South Dakota, East LA, or Manhattan. It doesn't matter if your parents were rich or poor. If you get a PhD you are a Doctor.
24.07.2025 14:27 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0It is bad public policy to discourage migrants from pursuing higher education. Education helps them learn English, assimilate, increase their lifetime earnings, etc.

If you teach about collective action and free-riding this is a neat example to use with students. Octopus and fish team up to hunt (collectively better than separate hunting) and octopus "punches" fish away who try to free ride. www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/w...

VERY excited about this massive AI persuasion experiment - big effects on UK policy positions, driven mostly by post-training (rather than hyperpersonalization or model scale); and the more info the model provides, the more persuasive it is
