That’s because as a web platform, Web5 only succeeds if it’s built atop open standards and is itself open source.

Oh hi there; I’m ALR, our Head of Open Source. I live this and all of us at TBD are building an open source company. Web5 is too important to not be a public good.

It’s the same identity mechanism under the hood in BlueSky.

All messaging and storage is backed by a true form of identity for the web, a Decentralized Identifier.

Web5 is built around DIDs.

And the dev experience is 🔥. Making a decentralized app is tough AF. Web5 hides all that complexity behind a friendly, web-native API.

Daniel Buchner, Our Head of Decentralized Identity, today used Web5’s privacy-preserving storage engine to make an in-browser media player here at Bitcoin Conf in Miami.

Our QuickStart is itself a Web5 application. It introduces the personal datastore - a database that keeps users’ info safe, and selectively shareable.

You can make the next Insta or iCloud without hosting your customers’ private info!

Last year we said the web was broken - it doesn’t come with trust built in. There’s no web identity except what we invent - and that can be anything.

Today we release #Web5 and invite devs to build their first secure, private, decentralized apps.
