Lots of overlap between French and English gothic, especially around the time this part was built! I'd love to see some of the old cathedrals of France in person one day

Yeah, freehanding it is really challenging. Completely different mental process to drawing stuff out properly on big paper with a ruler. The tiny sketchbook forces you to kinda just wing it a little, make mistakes, get stuff wrong, keep trying until you get something good

I now realise this is showing up on my desktop quite a bit larger than the actual physical drawing

Of course! Sat in there all afternoon sketching. Did another last week from Minster Gardens

Sorry AI bros, it's true: picking up a pencil really does work

I'd be mad but it's Scary Movie, they've always been about as funny as measles

Oh sure, I've got loads of these kinds of pics, interiors and exteriors from my various travels.

I know people make huge super detailed builds, but I find it way more fun trying to figure out what details to preserve and what to sacrifice by trying to keep to a particular scale. It's just block pixel art! Forces you to solve the construction like a puzzle because you can never be exact

It's got a lot of charm, and very interesting to compare as the start and finish of their respective stylistic periods, but there's a coherence about Salisbury and an incompleteness about Wells that puts Salisbury above it for me. Though that's on pure aesthetics, of course.

Salisbury cathedral as seen from the west looking East on a sunny summer day. A large light stone gothic building stands beside a green lawn. Its front is a large symmetrical stone screen filled with arches and statues flanking a set of three large windows in the centre. To either side are two towers with short pointed spires.
Behind them, further along the cathedral, is the tower with many fine details and windows, topped with a very tall stone spire.

The gothic north doorway of Salisbury cathedral on a summer day, looking down a path through a lawn to the stone gothic building, where many tall pointed windows can be seen. The doorway itself has a large and tall open pointed arch in its centre leading to a shaded passageway beyond. Above this archway are two smaller arches side by side, containing pairs of windows.
To the right of the path stands an old-fashioned lamppost.

Salisbury Cathedral as seen on a clear sunny day from Old Sarum. The entire building can be seen at a significant distance beyond many green trees. It is a very tall building, with a high central stone spire.

Don't mind me, just daydreaming about seeing my favourite cathedral again one day

I bet everyone that says "I bet you're fun at parties" is actually not that fun at parties.

Sure I made a couple of perspective errors here and there but it feels nice as a primarily digital artist to know I can also do on-paper stuff and have it come out okay

Though I need to remember next time to bring a pencil sharpener and also not smudge all the stuff with my hand...

Got myself a tiny little book I can put in my coat pocket so I can practice observational drawing freehand while out and about on adventures. Hopefully I can fill it up with interesting stuff
