From 1894-1921, the Field Museum was located in the Palace of Fine Arts in Jackson Park (now home to the Griffin MSI). When it moved to its present home in Grant Park, its enormous collection was moved *by train* on temporary tracks connecting the two buildings to the Illinois Central railroad.

Reproduction of a daguerreotype depicting flood damage from March 12, 1849 in Chicago. The image is a bit difficult to make out, but it shows a jumbled mass of boats and debris on the Chicago River.

Today is Chicago’s 189th birthday, and this ⬇️ is the city’s oldest known photograph (actually a woodcut reproduction of a daguerreotype). It depicts damage from a devastating flash flood on March 12, 1849.

Apparently there were plans for this corridor through downtown Ottawa to be a sunken expressway capped with parking garages.

Midcentury planners and traffic engineers were absolutely deranged. Unfortunately for us Americans, ours were much more successful at getting their projects built.

Sad to see vacant lots with an 'L' station in the background. The city has failed the West Side for a long time. But Mayor Johnson's missing middle infill initiative is a great step in the right direction, and actually includes a bunch of sites quite near this particular building.
