So we have tariffs and trade uncertainty driving up the price of everything.

Critical computer component shortages that will drive up the price of everything

And now oil prices going up that will drive up the price of everything.

And the US is the central cause of all three major shocks.

Waterloo Region locals: assuming for the moment a superhero movie set in the region, what local landmarks would absolutely get trashed to establish the Big Bad as a legitimate threat?

(The Schneider's sign is too far down the 401 to count, I think)

This. Money isn't the cost of things: it is the way of measuring the real costs. And the "benefits" of using weapons are, bluntly, deaths.

There are not economic benefits from upping global spending on war and weapons. We should by trying to avoid it. That we may not be able to is a tragedy.

I admit that I just saw a lovely painting and did not think about what it meant for the people (or horses) depicted.

You know, I thought when we invaded Afganistan, β€œwar is awful but at least we’ll free those poor women and girls from the Taliban.” Because I was an extremely naive 18 year old. Anyway, let’s check in on how that’s going

While we sit around to find out how bad exactly it all is, a bit of cheer: the best baguette of Paris competition was won by a Sri Lankan who appears to have started as a dish washer in restaurants and eventually trained as a Boulanger.

AI hallucinations -- still the weirdest fig-leaf synonym for "errors" -- are fundamental to how LLMs function.

When errors are fundamental to your tool, you shouldn't use it in any cases where errors have adverse consequences.

An anti-facist open letter from 23 retired Harvard Business School professors

Anti-fascism should have broad support across the American political spectrum. Elections need to be defended. Here's an open letter from retired professors at HBS in which we call for business leaders to address that need.

These people aren't against discrimination, they're against evidence. Can EDI policies be poorly designed, go 'too far', or be unfair? Yes. But employment equity policies that operate to ensure representation by allowing decisions on an 'all else being equal' basis are fair. 4/n

Not at the top of recent snowfall yet, but getting there; mostly due to earlier than usual snow this winter (the early November storm especially).

So many of academia's problems are downstream from this contempt for teaching, which is the majority of the work the university does, and the place where you build a social base to keep the whole institution alive for another generation.

I use this chart in most presentations that I give. AI could be a game changer, or it could be meh. But many costs are upfront while benefits are uncertain and delayed. That makes investment decisions tricky for leaders with short time horizons (hi, higher ed!).

This is bad. Full cost-benefit analyses are not easy to do, but imo the chances are good that providing books and education materials to people in prisons has long run benefits that outweigh the costs. That's not even considering the human rights aspects.

Going to give that one a go next trip. Would be nice to get some useful bus service from the cities out there as well.

I have enjoyed experimenting with the buses to YYZ, but there have certainly been adventures (trying to walk into Terminal 1 from Airport Rd in a March snowstorm was not good).
