AI and ML certainly look very exciting in that there are so many fundamental things to do, and at the same time the feedback loop between theory and experiments is extremely short. I can see why this field can be appealing to former theoretical physicists.

Academic job market certainly chews out young folks who were once full of dream and determination and leave them with bitterness and burnout.
