reading Laura Mulvey for at least the 20th time as class prep, and I’ve got to say it still hits

you can guess why that one stuck with me

years ago, @sir-ian.bsky.social, you wrote a haiku about college-town life that included the phrase β€œbros dipped in Axe,” and I thought you should know that that line pops into my head at least once a week

my review of Marty Supreme is that very few movies need to be longer than 90 minutes

based on the book of the same name? I haven't read it but attended a presentation that went over some of the basic principles, and it seemed potentially really useful

and then I convinced a colleague to watch My So-Called Life, so it seems my work here is done

it's unfortunate that most film studies books written in the 1980s and 1990s are basically unreadable

that may be a personal usage, but I’m pretty sure there are actual products marketed as β€œdad hats” and β€œdad jeans”

I think of a certain subset of popular history media as Dad History (the History Channel, Eric Larsen books or anything about the Civil War)

apparently between 2017 and 2022, I applied for 82 positions *just* using Interfolio

logging into my Interfolio account again was a special step in this process (there are 4 different email addresses on it)

one of my favorite class screenings of the year was tonightβ€”Babyface (1933). I joked about being a Barbara Stanwyck fan and assigning so many of her films, and afterward a community member (our screenings are public) came up to me and said I’m turning *her* into a Stanwyck fan

I do a similar interview project (about TV) in my Televisual Culture class, and would love to see more about the historian-from-the-future assignment

I used to have a line in my syllabus saying I didn’t reply to emails asking about information that could be found in the syllabus

What this technology is going to do is not end higher education, but it is going to undo so much of the baseline work on accessibility by pushing overworked professors to take things back to offline modalities, in person timed exams, keeping tech out of the classroom, etc.

Tol'able David - Wikipedia

In the first one he runs away from a film that's clearly an imitation of Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat, if that counts...

Oh and the scene in Sunset Boulevard where they watch Queen Kelly in Norma Desmond's living room...

The Tingler, which is arguably both, has an important scene set in a silent-movie theater!
