Another 2025 day, another record flash flood event This time it's Milwaukee hit with record flooding Aug 10, 2025 Well, we talked in yesterday’s newsletter about the risk for significant flash flooding returning to the Midwest this weekend — and the atmosphere delivered overnight. Late last evening, thunderstorms developed over the southeast Wisconsin, and storms with radar derived instantaneous rainfall rates of up 7” per hour trained across the region including the Milwaukee metro area.

Flash flooding is back this weekend for the Midwest Heat and fire weather continue to dominate the west Aug 09, 2025 We managed to have a couple of days this week where flash flooding was not a major threat, but that is over now as the summer of flash flooding gets active again this weekend. The cold front that has been moving across the northern Rockies and Plains causing severe weather in the region as well as enhancing fire danger across parts of the West will be plodding across the upper Midwest this weekend and focusing thunderstorms with heavy rainfall.

Executive order focused on federal science grants issued In weather: more Phoenix heat records, and western fire danger concerns Aug 08, 2025 In the context of my comments yesterday about the non-scientific approach being taken by the current administration with the National Climate Assessments, I want to share perspective about another governmental development from the last 24 hours. The White House yesterday afternoon announced a new executive order…

Administration planning to “update” the National Climate Assessments Heat and some significant severe weather threats dominate today's weather Aug 07, 2025 Starting off this morning sharing some perspective on comments by Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Chris Wright Tuesday night during an interview with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins. As outlined in this CNN article, Wright said that the widely reported removal from federal websites of past National Climate Assessments…

Taking a look at a warm planet Japan sets new record high temperatures; July 3rd warmest on record globally Aug 06, 2025 As we approach the peak of another US heatwave over the next couple of days, it is worth taking a step back and looking at the bigger global picture. While we do not yet have the “official” data from groups such as NOAA and EUMETSAT Copernicus, climatologist

NWS employees designated as “public safety” and exempt from hiring freeze Positive step towards fixing an administration self-inflicted wound Aug 05, 2025 Starting off this morning with job news from the National Weather Service (NWS). Multiple sources have told me that on an agency all-hands call yesterday, leadership told employees that the Trump administration has designated NWS employees in the meteorologist, hydrologist, and electronics technicians job categories as critical to public safety and exempt from the administration’s government wide hiring freeze.

Atlantic tropics getting more active, right on schedule And still anticipating major heat over the Southwest this week Aug 04, 2025 August is climatologically the start of the ramp up of Atlantic hurricane season toward its peak in September, and right on cue the tropics are getting more active this week. Major late summer heatwave for the Southwest Will bring increasing fire danger as well Aug 03, 2025 I want to spend much of today’s newsletter doing a bit of a deep dive into the major heatwave expected this week in the Southwest, and the increasingly concerning fire situation for much of the western US. This loop shows contours of geopotential height - similar to pressure lines on a surface weather map - for this week’s forecast from the European Centre (ECMWF) ensemble model at 500 millibars (mb), about 18,000 ft up in the atmosphere.

BalancedWx Special: Texas legislators hold flood hearing in Kerrville Many questions raised about local officials and emergency management Aug 01, 2025 I was busy monitoring weather yesterday and am just now catching up on the various media reports summarizing yesterday’s Texas legislature investigative hearing about the Texas Hill Country floods in early July. I wrote a recent deep dive into the Guadalupe River flood event after the initial hearing in Austin last week, but I feel compelled to share some additional thoughts and reemphasize some points based on articles about yesterday’s hearing and some feedback I received after my initial article.

Home now and doing an afternoon post, and starting off for a change with good news from the government weather apparatus. As my colleague Michael Lowry reported yesterday, the Department of Defense made a last minute decision not to terminate access to the SSMIS polar orbiting satellite data that is…

Positive signs from Congress on science, not so much from the administration 93L stays disorganized but still a significant heavy rain risk Jul 16, 2025 Happy hump day! There have been some developments related to the weather science community in the last couple of days that I want to start off with today. Yesterday, the House Appropriations subcommittee responsible for the Commerce, Justice and Science (CJS) FY2026 appropriations bill held their “markup” meeting to finalize their version of the bill to be sent to the full Appropriations Committee.
