Gutted. I almost managed to get over the fence at Glastonbury but was caught by security and told to go back and carry on watching Rod Stewart.

Got to stress the heat pump was not quick either - 34 days from contacting the installer to commissioning. And Andy’s circumstances were a bit unusual (primarily that he already had a hot water tank and his central heating needed some work). But still…

Had a lovely chat with @andymarsden.bsky.social about Visit a Heat Pump, and our work on clean heat neighbourhoods on @betatalk.bsky.social 's podcast. Thanks for having us!

It’s 100 years since the shipping forecast was first broadcast. A while ago I used a few Ai tools to write an energy forecast for offshore wind in the style of the shipping forecast. Is it time for an energy forecast? - murf.ai/share/lk895u0q

Getting a heat pump should be a small step not a giant leap A "heat pump ready" service for homes could smooth the transition to clean heat

Getting a heat pump can be complex. Many will need to make home improvements first to be 'heat pump ready.'

Nesta's @acjsissons.bsky.social suggests a 2-step journey: a winter-ready service to optimise current systems, followed by a second step to support the switch to a heat pump. bit.ly/4isiHZL

What are clean heat neighbourhoods? | A sustainable future | Nesta
YouTube video by Nesta - The UK's Innovation Agency What are clean heat neighbourhoods? | A sustainable future | Nesta

One of the big things I'm working on atm is Clean Heat Neighbourhoods - the idea we could switch to clean heating alongside neighbours, not just on our own.
But it's hard to explain - so we made a video to try and do that...

What did politicians and news presenters do in cold weather before wearing Uniqlo padded gilets under a more formal jacket? It’s a terrible look.

The case for local planning of energy and heat Making the energy transition simpler and more attractive to households via localised plans, governing bodies and funding

I've got a quick policy brief out this morning, on the case for local planning of heat and energy in Britain.

Local plans could help in many ways, making the transition smoother and probably cheaper overall. We should do it everywhere, and fund it properly!

The government just changed home heating rules - here’s what you need to know Recently announced reforms are much needed and will help boost clean heat

Slow to share - but loads of updates to heat policy last week. @codrinacretu.bsky.social has put together a great blog that summarises the important changes www.nesta.org.uk/blog/the-gov...

Air source heat pump cumulative noise impact Apex Acoustics, commissioned by Nesta, investigate the potential adverse effects of cumulative noise from air source heat pumps in high-density residential areas

Thanks Annie - my colleagues have done some work on noise levels. (www.nesta.org.uk/report/air-s...) Placement of the outdoor unit is important! We’re interested in looking at shared ground source hp arrays, heat networks and other solutions in this work. It may mean an outdoor unit isn’t needed.

Areas of collaboration for coordinated switching Testing our understanding with partners to build the capacity to deliver a more coordinated transition to low-carbon heat

We’re looking to test key elements of our proposal from earlier in the year with partners around the UK

We’ve doubled down on three areas. Zoning, scheme design and delivery.

Coordinated switching Facilitating a more coordinated strategy to transition households to low-carbon heating

We’ve (@nestauk.bsky.social) published an update to our coordinated switching work - as we think households and industry could benefit from a more coordinated approach to low carbon heat.

We’ve brought all our content on this theme into one place www.nesta.org.uk/coordinated-...

Thanks frank! There’s already a suitable base in the orientation we’d hope to move it to! Good to know it’s pretty straightforward. I’ll chat to our installer!

After heat pump advice - I'm hopefully having an ASHP installed as our boilers broken - it'll be installed in a position that isn't where we'd want it long-term. How much work/cost is involved in moving the outdoor unit once we have planning? We're only really talking about rotating it 90 degrees.

Charting the course: findings from phase one of mapping heat pump suitability What kinds of heating technologies are suitable for neighbourhoods across England and Wales?

How many homes in Britain are suitable for a heat pump? Or, more accurately, which homes are likely suitable for what type of heat pump?
We've been doing some work on this @nestauk.bsky.social , and have some early, rough work to share.
