Do not pander. Do not dumb down. Do not make your voice less magical. Trust your audience to be smarter than you. Trust them to be as curious as fuck. Never blame anyone for the tepid, lazy choices you make in your work.

Reimagining Caribbean indenture in an artistically botanical afterlife A refreshingly original art exhibit in Port of Spain, Trinidad, examines what it means to be living a post-indenture, feminist life.

also really love this article by @francomenz.bsky.social, about an exhibit engaging with art, history, gender, botany, colonialism, and indenture in the Caribbean - really cool and interesting!

A copy of Rakesfallโ€”the hot pink cover of which depicts a skull surrounded by flowers and vinesโ€”sits on a black surface against a white wall. A small pot next to it contains a vine-like plant, which is draped across the top of the book. The Ursula K. Le Guin Prize for Fiction Shortlist medal is in the upper right corner of the photo.

"We put on a play for ourselves, we ghosts, we people, we devils, with our superstitions like solidity, objects, time, or justice. We live in confusion, we swim in it. But the world is not a river to swim in; it is a glacial ocean, always whole, already complete." โ€”Vajra Chandrasekera, Rakesfall

๐ŸŒŸShortlisted for the 2025 Ursula K. Le Guin Prize for Fiction๐ŸŒŸ

Revolutionary-minded and dizzyingly intricate, Vajra Chandrasekeraโ€™s Rakesfall defies narrative expectations as it considers history, power, perspective, resistance, and the โ€œdread scaleโ€ of myth and nightmare.

my modest disagreement is that i think it is important to signal virtue even if, privately, you are a piece of shit. performing decency is an important part of maintaining the norm that decency is part of a well ordered society.

it's also highlighting my issue with a lot of current "retellings" and "reimaginings" but that's another thread and I do want to get thru another 30 pages of this before work lmao ๐Ÿซ ๐Ÿ˜ญ

and i do think a substantive 350 page novel based on the same material COULD be written BY THIS WRITER!! (and I'm very curious abt their future work and love the way they talk about their writing) but it would have to be somewhat different than what i think it's intended to be

17.07.2025 14:03 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

this ISN'T an issue in current "litfic" - I keep mentally comparing this book to Groff's MATRIX (stunning - under 300 pages - dreamy but very material) and people love novellas so ????? what abt the 200-220 page sff novel

17.07.2025 14:00 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 2    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 1

there are plenty of writers rn who CAN and DO meaningfully fill 350 page books. 400 page books! More sometimes! But there are even more who can't and a lot of current editorial isn't doing anything about that.

17.07.2025 13:56 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

there's no real .... material. it's the opposite of my maximalist wish for sff BUT i think it could be much stronger as a much shorter old-DAW type paperback - unfortunately it's getting the $32 350+ page deluxe edition treatment that is the norm lmao

17.07.2025 13:54 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

reading a book that is one of my most anticipated for next year and it's written ethereally (affectionate) enough that i will read the whole thing before fully criticizing it - but it really does highlight one of my major issues w current sff publishing - fear of the 210-page novel

17.07.2025 13:52 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0
