I live near Aberystwyth. We've been campaigning for years to re-open a line to Carmarthen, which would connect with the line to Cardiff. At the moment it's 4+hrs on the train, via England, when a car is under 3 hrs. Cost estimated at around £700mn. It's not just about going from Aber to Cardiff!

It seems a great idea in principle - but it should be evaluated as part of an integrated public transport network, not just "will the line pay". The costs of rebuilding & running local train lines (little more than big buses on tracks) shouldn't be massive when an original trackbed still exists.

Ah yes, I remember now. Cambridge Station is nowhere near the city centre because the landowners and colleges refused permission for it, so the line ended up on the outskirts! And unless Cambridge traffic has massively improved in the last 30 years, it's a very slow trip by road into the centre.

If that was likely it would probably have already happened!

And nuts don't have the resources of the country that developed the Shahed drone (and probably a lot of other little toys-that-go-bang)- with active input from Russia who've been fighting a constantly-evolving drone war for four years.

I lived in Peterborough at one stage and couldn't understand the people who daily drove 20+ minutes to the station car park, a 10 minute walk to the platform, hour train to KingsX, Tube/bus to wherever then repeat in reverse 8hrs later. That's not a life, no matter how good the pension is!

...and massively inflate house prices. Although why would people want/need to do an 80-mile round trip commute every day?
