Yes, Ali told me about you and shared a picture of Dean. He told us you followed us here. We were excited to learn we had a local follower. He’s an awesome guy we used to volunteer together at Aps of Durham. I luckily reconnected with him when our other Pet Sitter could no longer work for us.

I didn’t know these people at all, but I could just hear the grief in her mom‘s voice and the worry about her daughter‘s dogs.

No thank you’s needed really. I just kept looking at Josie and thinking about her if something like that happened to me. I was also worried because our rural shelters have very limited kennel space and are overcrowded. Unfortunately, they have to euthanize for space a lot.

Josie seemed to do fine with either. Champ was deaf and Helen had previously owned a deaf dog, so it just seemed natural for her to adopt Champ and me Chance. So on December 6, I went back and made it official with Chance. I will post the rest of Champ’s story later as I have work today.

She was open to the idea as long as our dogs would accept them in. At the time she had two dogs and a foster dog and she just wasn’t sure she would be able to adopt another one until she got her foster adopted. So on December 4, we went to the shelter to meet them and I brought Josie with us.

I shared their story with my friend Helen that we hike with(we also work together) and asked her if I adopted one would she consider adopting the other. I just wasn’t really in the position to take both, but it would’ve been so hard to take one and leave one behind. This is Champ.

It just really tugged at my heart strings. I just kept thinking if something that tragic had happened to me. I would want somebody to take Josie in and love her the way I do. When I saw these pictures, I knew I had to do something. I could just tell that she loved her dogs the way that I love mine.

They were at the shelter for about a month before we heard about them. Lisa’s mother lives in the same city as we do and in early Dec that year she posted a desperate plea on the Nextdoor app looking for someone to adopted her daughter’s dogs. She said her dogs were like her babies.

Chance and his two fur siblings (Baby Girl and Champ) lived in a rural area about 1 hour from where we live. On Nov. 7 2023 Lisa and her boyfriend were murdered in their home. Baby Girl was also shot and killed that day. Champ and Chance were taken to the Nash county shelter.

Some of our newer frens over here don’t know Chance’s backstory. We shared it on Twitter when we first adopted Chance. We will share it again for the people we have met since moving to bluer skies. This pic is from when I first met him Dec. 4th 2023
