Long before her own diagnosis with Alzheimer’s disease, Dear Abby brought dementia and the Alzheimer’s Association into the spotlight when, in 1980, she published a letter from a woman whose husband had recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

During #WomensHistoryMonth, we honor Pauline Phillips, who you may know as Dear Abby, who gave a voice to those with Alzheimer’s disease while the world was still beginning to recognize its existence. ✍️

Paulita emphasizes the importance of collaboration for making a true impact. “Trusted community partnerships, particularly faith-based and grassroots organizations, are key to expanding reach, building trust and sustaining meaningful change.”

Additionally, Paulita participated in the Alzheimer’s Association Risk Reduction Learning Collaborative, convening communities, integrating age-friendly public health strategies, and strengthening data, evaluation and policy alignment to support long-term sustainability.

Paulita has worked on critical initiatives, such as implementing the Mississippi Alzheimer’s State Plan, expanding dementia-friendly communities and congregations, and leading community education around brain health and risk reduction.

Her leadership has been impactful in shaping Mississippi’s approach to community-driven brain health engagement. Through BOLD, she has strengthened awareness around brain health, increased access to community support, and elevated brain health as a public health priority.
