02.03.2026 14:04 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0It’s all about the rush to get things out, to satisfy a market, to compete—and who they’re competing with are doing the exact same thing. So we see no growth in the actual skill involved in writing.

02.03.2026 13:33 — 👍 81 🔁 24 💬 2 📌 0Choosing to publish a column, especially a series of columns that follow a narrow ideology is a choice. The Times promotes right wing ideas not through occasionally publishing a conservative piece but by constantly pushing con ideas/frames in opinion and news coverage

02.03.2026 04:46 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0It infuriates and frustrates me as well. Why am I out here torturing myself trying to write when it no longer seems to matter?
02.03.2026 04:38 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Hence the greater importance of character art than of the books themselves. They want pretty pictures, no substance.
02.03.2026 04:35 — 👍 3 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Yeah. I said basically this in another reply. I'm sure BookTok and influencers have a lot to do with it, too.
02.03.2026 04:33 — 👍 3 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0It has already resulted in stunted books. There has been a huge shift, especially in the indie romance space, in how people approach writing and the business of it. It’s a product-driven fandom, not art.
02.03.2026 04:28 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Is this a product of being dependent on AO3 kudos/comments or whatever the equivalent is on Wattpad? Is that where it’s coming from? Because I’m just baffled by it.

All spice and smut in a book is sex.
All sex in a book is NOT spice or smut.
Some people really need to understand that distinction.
Like I was saying the other day—craft is all but dead. No one’s learning to write. They’re just learning to market.

02.03.2026 03:51 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Jesus fucking Christ. I keep seeing authors on Threads asking readers how many sex scenes they should put in their books. “What would you prefer?” WTF? Your characters/plot should inform how much sex there is, not randos. Your book is not Burger King. Readers do not need to have it their way.

I’m about to attempt the Diego Luna and Jennifer Lopez version of Kiss of the Spider Woman.

I am not surprised her YA is as gripping as her adult work. I’ve loved her Shelly Ellis books and what I’ve read of L.S. Stratton.
02.03.2026 02:50 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Just finished L.S. Stratton’s Sundown Girls and if I were wearing socks they’d be knocked off. That could also be the weed talking but I’m pretty sure it’s the book. Shelly’s YA debut about a once-kidnapped Black teen getting drawn into the history, and equally perilous present, of a sundown town.
